Whakarewarewa Redwood Forest  – The forest is popular with mountain bikers and walkers. The area offers a wide range of trails and one of a kind tree walk among 115-year-old Redwood trees. Easy access and plenty of car parks.

Kuirau park – The park is the only geothermal public park in New Zealand and located in the heart of the city. At the park you will experience great geothermal activity and you can also soak your feet at the park footbath.

Lake RotoruaLake Rotorua is the second largest lake in New Zealand’s North Island and originated from a collapsed volcano.  The area around the lake is still geothermal active to this date. At the lake you can take a floatplane or helicopter and explore the lakes in the area and Mt Tarawera from above.   

  • How to get there: A 5 minutes walk from the city centre
  • How long should you spend there: 2 hours

Blue Lake, Green Lake and Lake TaraweraThese three lakes are popular swimming and water sports spot among locals and tourists. The lakes are located a short distance from each other. The Blue Lake is the most popular and offers a great loop walk with an incredible view of the lake. Lake Tarawera is the biggest among the three lakes and sites at the base of an active volcano Mt Tarawera. The Tarawera Trail is a famous 15kms track on the western side of the lake and ends at the Hot Water Beach.

  • How to get there: Around 25 minutes drive (20kms) from city centre
  • How long should you spend there: Full day
  • How much cost: Free


Skyline (Gondola and Luge) – Located on the site of Mt Ngongotaha the Skyline gondola will take you to 487 metres above sea level and offer great views of the city and lake. On your way down you can take the luge cart and enjoy the ride with family and friends.

  • How to get there: Around 10 minutes drive (4.2kms) from the city centre
  • How long should you spend there: Half-day
  • How much cost: From $30 per person
