Traffic Light System

Traffic Light System - Covid-19 Protection framework update

The new Traffic Light System was put in place at 11:59 pm on December 2. It has given travelers a bit more freedom and to help you understand the step by step of it, here’s a list of things you should know when travelling around the country and picking up a vehicle from our branches:

  • Auckland is currently at RED settings, as well as the Northland, Taupō and Rotorua Lakes Districts, Kawerau, Whakatane, Ōpōtiki Districts, Gisborne District, Wairoa District, Rangitikei, Whanganui and Ruapehu Districts;
  • The rest of the North Island and the South Island is at Orange.

The travelling restrictions will be applied as follows below:

From 3 to 14 December 2021, travelling from or to Auckland is restricted and can only happen with a specific permit.

  • Evidence of a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 72 hours before crossing the boundary is required.

From 15 December 2021 to 17 January 2022, anyone can come in or out of Auckland without a permit, but before crossing the borders, you must provide:

  • Proof you are fully vaccinated by presenting your My Vaccine Pass OR
  • Evidence of a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 72 hours prior to the trip.
  • These temporary restrictions just apply to Auckland.

Except for Auckland, you can travel anywhere in New Zealand at Red settings. You do not need a vaccine pass or a negative COVID-19 test but you need to follow the guidelines for each area when you are there:

  • At Red settings, it is important to keep close contact to a minimum;
  • At Orange settings, there are no physical distancing restrictions.

From 18 January 2022, there will be no restrictions on travel out of Auckland.

  • Remember: when travelling into a different area, you must follow the guidelines of that area's Traffic Light rules.
